We took our dog to the vet's this morning, first thing. She had to be muzzled, poor thing, as she does not like vets messing about with her - especially in the area the vet had to look at! But she is okay - it's just a nasty infection (that she could have caught in a number of ways - including rampaging through the woods after anything that moves [her favourite hobby], not caring if she catches herself on anything). The vet gave us antibiotics to treat her abcess and will see her again in a couple of days time, to make sure she is okay. But she seems fine; she's eating now again, so we know she's alright 
.
But the vet's bill was huge, as usual (luckily they agreed to go staight to our pet insurers so we only have to pay the excess), but that's just one of the many money 'problems' we have in this pre-Christmas time 
I went into work for the late shift, but was prompltly sent home again! I have been 'on the sick' for a short time, but had been hoping to return to work today. Something pretty awful happened at work recently and it shook me up. I ended up panicky and depressed, and as the work I do requires me to be in control, very attentive to detail and caring, I was obviously not up to it! I was hoping that I would have been given the 'all clear' for today, but it seems that 'they' have decided that I would be better waiting to return until after Christmas. That would normally be a good thing - but...
This leaves me with the problem of severe lack of funds! I was off work for quite a while a couple of years ago after a couple of major operations (one an emergency), it took me some time to get well again. At first I got better physically, but then what the docs considered to be 'post traumatic stress' set in, and I was a wreck for months.
The result was that I was 'on benefit' for quite a long time. When I finally found an employer who was willing to give me a try, despite my 'sick record', I signed a form with the 'Benefit's Office'. This said that, if I was off sick in the first year of my new employment, I would be entitled to increased sickness benefit (or 'Incapacity Benefit' as they call it), but this would mean that, if I was off sick, my employers would not have to pay my sick pay - the Benefits Office would do that directly. But it did mean that I would get a little more money that way.
Well, that sounded okay until I 'went sick' after the 'incident' at work. I then found that my wages had been stopped immediately (no holiday pay owed, no tax rebate, nothing), but the Benefits Office took ages getting their act together. So we ended up relying on only my partner's money for weeks.
That, in itself, would not have been such a problem if my partner had not been made redundant! Although he received a subtantial pay off from his old employers, it all went in paying off debts we had accumulated over the time when I couldn't work at all (and everything that could go wrong with the house, the car, etc, etc, did go wrong 
). And, as his work is quite specialised, he has found it hard getting another job (at the moment he is working in a very low paid job just to have somewhere to go to work each day 
). But he does have a better job in the offing for the new year - fingers, toes and everything elsed tightly crossed!
So, basically, we have been short of money for some time now. We have just about got by, only paying bills when they become really urgent, not going out at all, cutting down on spending in every area - you get the picture.... But we thought we would be okay - just.
We would have made it through Christmas if I had been able to go back to work today. I would have been able to claim an immediate refund on pension payments I had 'cashed in' and a 'sub' on my next month's wages. But I could only get these if I was working. And now I'm not! 
So tomorrow I am going to the dentist for my root canal treatment and I am hoping that, when it comes to paying the bill, my card is not refused - but they can't remove the work they've done even if my card is refused can they? So I'll just take that as it comes.
We have been short of money before, and we no doubt will again. I just wish it wasn't at Christmas!
